Amicus Chambers WELCOMES The Honourable Sandra Chapnik, O. Ont.
Sandra Chapnik is delighted to join her judicial colleagues at Amicus Chambers. A teacher, mentor, lawyer and judge, Sandra was called to the Ontario Bar in 1978 and was appointed to the Superior Court of Justice – Ontario in 1991. As a lawyer, in addition to a busy family law and civil litigation practice, Sandra served as an adjudicator, hearing and mediating cases as a Rent Review Commissioner. She was also a Fact Finder and Mediator for the Ministry of Education, served as Vice-Chair of the Worker’s Compensation Appeals Tribunal and a was member of the Pension Appeals Board of Canada. As an elected Bencher of the Law Society of Ontario, Sandra chaired committees on Education and Alternate Dispute Resolution.
As a judge, Sandra used her adjudicative skills to mediate cases and wrote over 600 reported decisions on all aspects of civil, criminal, family, administrative law and appeals, many of which are used as precedents. Her judgments are widely known to be thoughtful and concise, based on common sense and good judgment. Upon her retirement from the Court in 2016, Sandra was appointed a distinguished visiting professor at Ryerson University and she continues to support and advance women’s equality, education, human rights, civil liberties and access to justice.
Sandra Chapnik is the recipient of several honours and awards, including the University of Toronto Alumni of Influence Award, the Order of Ontario, the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal, and the Women’s Law Association of Ontario President’s Award.
Sandra has returned to the adjudication field as a private mediator offering expertise and guidance to people in the process of settling their disputes.
